About the FMA

The International Election Monitors Institute (IEMI), officially launched in June 2006, is a joint undertaking of the European Parliament Former Members Association, the United States Association of Former Members of Congress and the Canadian Association of Former Parliamentarians. The aim of the Institute is to train former legislators to serve globally as election monitors, to participate in several election observation missions per year, and to involve former legislators of the three Associations in post-election democracy building endeavours.

"EP to Campus" Programme is a programme where members spend up to one week in residence at a University outside their  Member State to talk about the role of an MEP.The programme was launched in 2006, with a seminar at the European University Institute in Florence.

On 9 June 2010, we organised a Gala Dinner in Brussels where the MEP Sharon Bowles, President of the Special Committee on the Financial, Economic and Social Crisis addressed an audience blending business people and politicians on the subject "The regulatory landscape and the future of the Eurozone". The Annual General Assembly took place on 10 June. Photos of these two events are available in the section Photos gallery.

In October 2010, we will travel to Iceland for our annual Study Visit, which is a mixture of political dialogue and sightseeing. Previous visits have taken us to Ukraine, Morocco, Romania, Bulgaria,  Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Croatia, Montenegro and Albania.

Other ongoing activities include:

  • Assistance to members to participate in Election Observation Missions;
  • Opportunities for  technical assistance missions to the applicant states;
  • Seminars and conferences on subjects of EU interest;
  • Dinner-debates with high-profile European speakers;
  • Fully-equipped Bureaux de passage for the use of former MEPs when they are in Brussels or Strasbourg;
  • Possibility to have access to EP intranet.

Our Annual Members Dinner will take place on 1st  December 2010, followed by the Annual Seminar the day after. This is the highlight of our social calendar and gathers about 200 colleagues in Brussels each year.
