Constantinos Tsoutsoplides\, Head of the EPLO in Greece\, provided some introductory comments. Ms Karamanou and her book were introduced by Teresa Riera Madurell and moderated by Jean-Pierre Audy\, both FMA Board members. Guest Speaker Pat Cox\, former EP (2002-2004) and FMA President (2010-2014)\, gave an inspiring speech on ‘War in Ukraine – the 21st century’s most momentous geopolitical event’: “Putin’s invasion of Ukraine marks a point of inflection in global history and is the most momentous geopolitical event so far of the 21st century. This new reality has been an eye-opening wake up call for democracies across the world. The FMA publication ‘Present Future of Europe’\, a collection of proposals to stimulate debate on the ideas for today’s Europe\, was presented and discussed with EU policy-makers\, in the light of the final report on the outcome of the CoFoE. \nAnthony Teasdale\, Director General of the European Parliamentary Research Service (EPRS)\, opened the Roundtable followed by a presentation of the FMA publication by the then FMA President and former EP President Hans-Gert Pöttering. Monica Baldi\, FMA Vice-President; Dieter Schlenker\, Director of EU Historical Archives in Florence and Professor Steven Van Hecke\, advisor to the FMA Reflection Group on the CoFoE\, provided introductory remarks on the production of the FMA publication “Present Future of Europe”. The presentation was entrusted to FMA Treasurer Jean-Pierre Audy. \nThe publication\, as well as the contributions from eminent personalities representing the worlds of institutions\, politics\, culture and science\, collects the proceedings of the international conference “How to Overcome COVID-19 Pandemic and its Consequences“\, held on 23 September 2021 at the European University Institute in Florence and organised  in collaboration with Women 20 and the Historical Archives of the EU\, on the occasion of the Italian Presidency of the G20. \nThe presentation was opened by FMA Vice-President Monica Baldi and by the Director for the European Parliament Liaison Offices Stephen Clark.  The event was introduced by the Secretary General of the European University Institute in Florence (EUI) Marco Del Panta and the President of the W20 Elvira Marasco. The proposal is the result of the work carried out by the prestigious members of the ad hoc “Reflection Group on the Future of the EU“. The text\, that was created in fruitful collaboration\, further matured during a cycle of events. Concretely\, it contains five general guidelines for the future of Europe and ten concrete proposals for the direction  of the European Union. Importantly\, the proposal considers that the conference should focus on general issues relating to European integration; on how to better protect the rule of law; on the methods to be used for the EU to become increasingly efficient; and on how it can increase its capacity to act and achieve what citizens expect. All that without excluding the possibility of modifying the Treaty. \nThis FMA Proposal to the “Conference on the Future of Europe” can be downloaded in all 24 EU official languages from the FMA website. \n  \nThis conference was the pinnacle of the event\, called “Present Future of Europe”. There is war in Europe. Russia has attacked a brother country\, the people of Ukraine. It is not only an attack against the Ukrainian nation; it is an attack against the whole of Europe\, on our values\, of the dignity of the human being\, freedom\, democracy\, legal order and peace. This is an historic moment and the citizens of Ukraine should know that we are here to help them.” \nOn 1 March 2022\, the FMA co-organised a virtual public debate on the Future of Europe with the European Parliament Liaison Office in Paris and the Jean Monnet House. \nDuring this session Former Members\, Academics and students had the opportunity to discuss about the FMA Proposal to the Conference on the Future of Europe.
