DESCRIPTION:We are delighted to announce that our recent event in collaboration with the University of Oviedo\, entitled ‘The European Pact on Migration and Asylum: Keys and Consequences’\, took place on Thursday 26 September at 12:45. The keynote speaker\, AAD member Leopoldo López Gil\, led an enriching discussion. \nThe conference was part of the Faculty of Commerce’s complementary activities\, specially designed for students pursuing a degree in commerce\, with a focus on international trade within the European Union. Organised in Spanish\, it marked the Faculty’s inaugural event for the 2024/2025 academic year. \nParticipants were able to explore key aspects of the European Pact on Migration and Asylum\, including the content of the pact\, the challenges faced during negotiations\, the agreement process and the role of the European Parliament. The discussion also examined whether the Pact improves migration management or presents new challenges\, with a particular focus on its implications for Spain. \nWe would like to thank all those who took part and contributed to the success of this important event!

DESCRIPTION:From 18 to 23 August 2024\, the FMA together with the University ORT of Uruguay has organized a three-day EP to Campus programme on campus on the framework of the Euromodel on the work of the European Parliament.  \nThe former MEP and Ambassador Ana Gomes gave a presentation to a group of 70 students as part of a simulation of a discussion in the European Parliament. These students have been selected among 300 candidates from all universities and careers of Uruguay. \nIn her presentation Ana Gomes shared her experience in negotiation in an engaging way for the students. She introduced the functioning of the different European Commissions. She explained the role of members of the European Parliament and political parties with respect to the different nationalities. She spiked vivid interest and questions from the audience were abundant. \nThis is what the EP to Campus programme is about – extending the work of the European Union. In this case\, from the European parliament\, disseminating its principles and role\, which is not always straightforward in on the international scene. \n

Former MEP Mr. Manzella\, renowned for his pivotal role in drafting the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the Union\, brings a wealth of experience to his analysis of the European Parliament’s evolution. \nAs we navigate the complexities of European integration and parliamentary democracy\, this book offers invaluable insights into the transformative journey of the European Parliament’s influential role in shaping both European and national politics. The event reflected also on the outcomes of the recent European elections while looking ahead to the upcoming legislative period. \nFMA President and Former President of the European Parliament Klaus Hänsch delivered a word of welcome followed by opening remarks from Head of EPLO Italy Carlo Corazza. FMA Vice-President Monica Baldi presented the book and introduced Andrea Manzella who provided his insights into the book. A question & answer session with the audience followed with the participation of co-author Nicola Lupo. FMA Vice-President Monica Baldi conducted the Roll Call and Pat Cox\, former EP and FMA President\, the closing oration. Mr Grosch advocated for greater alignment between Belgian and EU systems\, while Desutter underscored the importance of leveraging EU influence to foster unity among member states. \nThe inaugural high-level debate\, featuring H.E. Ambassador W. van de Voorde\, delved into multifaceted issues ranging from the rule of law to EU competitiveness. Ambassador van de Voorde reiterated the Belgian Presidency’s commitment to unity and strength\, encapsulated in the slogan of the Belgian Presidency of the Council of the European Union: PROTECT\, STRENGTHEN\, AND PREPARE. \nThe FMA Visit to Belgium continued with a presentation of the Belgian Institutional System by Pieter Caboor\, Director of the Legal Department of the Chamber\, and a guided tour of the Chamber of Representatives and the Senate. \nSenator Gaëtan Van Goidsenhoven\, co-president of the Federal Advisory Committee on European Affairs (FACEA)\, emphasized the importance of parliamentary diplomacy in fostering political dialogue. FMA Vice-President Monica Baldi and FMA Board Member and EP to Campus coordinator Michael Hindley presented the FMA_HAEU entitled “Participation in Europe”\, which is based on contributions of speakers and guests during the hybrid conference of June 16 2023. This conference\, organised by the European Parliament Former Members Association\, Erasmus+/Indire and the Historical Archives of the European Union\, examined three concrete programmes developed to increase the understanding and participation of young people in Europe.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_flickr flickr_id=”151862050@N07″ count=”9″][/vc_column][/vc_row]

The book explores ways to enhance civic education and envision a European landscape where citizens are not just spectators but active architects of their democratic future. The publication is based on contributions of speakers and guests during the hybrid conference on 16 June 2023. The event was opened by FMA President Klaus HÄNSCH. \nFMA Honorary Secretary Teresa RIERA MADURELL introduced the editors and emphasised that “according to the white paper on European governance ‘participation is crucial to achieve more democratic governance in the EU’. Dieter SCHLENKER\, Director of the Historical Archives of the European Union (HAEU) and Valentina RIBOLDI\, Communication Unit Italian Erasmus+ National Agency – INDIRE\, both made a short online intervention\, before having moved on to the Q&A session with the audience in the room and connected online. \nThe event ended with the final remarks of the editors with FMA’s Vice-President Monica Baldi stated that “education is crucial! The book which was a common effort (…) shows that through dialogue\, education and training we can truly achieve a better Europe!” \nFrom 11.00 to 13.00 (Brussels’ time)\, the FMA held its Annual Seminar 2023 on ‘New technological transition: opportunities and challenges’ in the European Parliament\, Brussels. Guest speakers Associate Professor of IT Law at the University of Tartu and Research Fellow at the School of Transnational Governance (EUI)\, Marta CANTERO\, and CEO of the Customized Artificial Intelligence Solutions company Querlo\, Francesco RULLI\, delivered eye-opening and insightful speeches on the opportunities and challenges of new technologies such as Artificial Intelligence. \nMarta CANTERO GAMITO unpacked the perceived “Trilemma of political governance” and stated that “we stand at the verge of a major transformation – the shift from human to machine decision-making.
