SUMMARY:FMA Study visit 2022 to the Jean Monnet Foundation in Lausanne

First stop of the visit was Geneva\, where Ambassador Anda Filip welcomed the Delegation at the Inter-Parliamentary Union and had an extensive debate on IPU’s accountability mechanism\, criteria for free and fair elections\, multilateralism and climate urgency\, parliamentary solidarity\, women’s participation and relations with civil society. FMA Board Member and former President of IPU (1994-1997) Miguel Angel Martinez Martinez was also part of the Delegation. A follow-up meeting took place with IPU’s Secretary General Martin Chungong on 27 September\, including an exchange on the future co-operation between IPU and the FMA. \n  \nOn Friday 23 September the visit continued at the Jean Monnet Foundation for Europe. There the Delegation was warmly welcomed by President of the Foundation – and former EP and FMA President – Pat Cox\, who also gave an intense and passionate presentation about the figure of Jean Monnet. Constantinos Tsoutsoplides\, Head of the EPLO in Greece\, provided some introductory comments. Ms Karamanou and her book were introduced by Teresa Riera Madurell and moderated by Jean-Pierre Audy\, both FMA Board members. This new reality has been an eye-opening wake up call for democracies across the world. The FMA publication ‘Present Future of Europe’\, a collection of proposals to stimulate debate on the ideas for today’s Europe\, was presented and discussed with EU policy-makers\, in the light of the final report on the outcome of the CoFoE. \nAnthony Teasdale\, Director General of the European Parliamentary Research Service (EPRS)\, opened the Roundtable followed by a presentation of the FMA publication by the then FMA President and former EP President Hans-Gert Pöttering. Monica Baldi\, FMA Vice-President; Dieter Schlenker\, Director of EU Historical Archives in Florence and Professor Steven Van Hecke\, advisor to the FMA Reflection Group on the CoFoE\, provided introductory remarks on the production of the FMA publication “Present Future of Europe”. The presentation was entrusted to FMA Treasurer Jean-Pierre Audy. \nThe publication\, as well as the contributions from eminent personalities representing the worlds of institutions\, politics\, culture and science\, collects the proceedings of the international conference “How to Overcome COVID-19 Pandemic and its Consequences“\, held on 23 September 2021 at the European University Institute in Florence and organised  in collaboration with Women 20 and the Historical Archives of the EU\, on the occasion of the Italian Presidency of the G20. \nThe presentation was opened by FMA Vice-President Monica Baldi and by the Director for the European Parliament Liaison Offices Stephen Clark.  The event was introduced by the Secretary General of the European University Institute in Florence (EUI) Marco Del Panta and the President of the W20 Elvira Marasco.
