A history of the European Parliament at the ballot box (1979-2024) is the third of a series of commemorative publications promoted by the Jean Monnet House of the European Parliament and the European Observatory on Memories of the University of Barcelona’s Solidarity Foundation in collaboration with the Istituto di Studi Federalisti Altiero Spinelli and with the support of the programme Citizens\, Equality\, Rights and Values (CERV) of the European Commission. \nThe European Parliament elections of 2024 marked the tenth occasion for Europeans to directly elect their representatives at a supranational level. Since 1979\, universal suffrage has enabled citizens to be at the heart of the decisions that affect their lives at the European level. This book surveys these ten formative milestones\, their roots\, and their implications for the future. The contributors\, some of them firsthand actors or witnesses of the events\, provide a compelling overview of the elections\, covering a wide range of perspectives. Through both scholarly and hands-on approaches\, the authors consider the ten European elections in their historical context\, from the first steps towards a fully democratic Parliament to the gradual widening of its powers\, with meaningful reflections on the future prospects of European democracy. \nYou can read the entire book here.[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][vc_column_text css=””]END OF YEAR GREETINGS[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=””]The Librorum was part of the FMA Annual Events “End of Year Greetings” and was followed by the Annual Seminar: “The role of EU institutions and Parliamentary Diplomacy in a changing world”. \nThe FMA Annual Events “End of Year Greetings” began on 9 December with: \n\nFrom 18.30 to 21.30: Cocktail Reception and Annual Dinner. More information is available here.\n\nPlease note that the Cocktail Reception and Annual Dinner was exclusively reserved for FMA Members and their guests.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Key takeaways included: \n\nDemocracy in the Digital Era: Schaake emphasized the urgency of adapting democratic governance to address challenges posed by rapid technological advancements\, advocating for policies that prioritize transparency\, accountability\, and citizen rights in the digital space.\nRegulating Big Tech: She highlighted the critical need for governments to step up and ensure that powerful tech corporations align with democratic values: “is it appropriate to have such big private powers without democratic guardrails and accountability at all? I believe that some of the solutions will have to come from a very laser focus on reclaiming the governance primacy on the part of democratic leaders and institutions. That should be the lens in every decision.” Ms. Schaake argued that regulation\, rather than hindering innovation\, can safeguard public interest while promoting ethical technological development.\nGlobal Perspectives on Technology: The audience explored the disparities in technological leadership and regulation across regions\, with Europe needing to bridge gaps in innovation compared to the U.S. and China. Ms. Schaake stressed the importance of Europe establishing its own model that integrates advanced technology with strong protections for democracy and human rights.\nThe Role of Artificial Intelligence: Ms. Schaake elaborated on AI’s transformative impact on society\, describing it as both an opportunity and a potential risk to democratic processes. She advocated for collaborative international efforts to establish ethical frameworks for AI development.\n\nThe session concluded with a powerful reminder from Ms. Schaake: “Technology is not inherently good or bad—it is up to us to ensure that it serves democracy\, rather than undermining it.” \nThis event reaffirmed the importance of fostering critical dialogue between policymakers\, academics\, and citizens to safeguard democracy in the digital age.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””] \nPROGRAMME LIBRORUM\n“The Tech Coup: How to save Democracy from Silicon Valley” by former MEP Marietje Schaake\n\n\n\n10.00 – 10.05\nWelcome\nby Klaus HÄNSCH\, President of the European Parliament Former Members Association and Former President of the European Parliament\n\n\n10.05 – 10.10\nIntroduction\nby Danny DE PAEPE\, Head of the European Parliament Liaison Office (EPLO) in The Netherlands\n\n\n10.10 – 10.20\nPresentation of the author Marietje Schaake and the book\nby Manuel PORTO\, FMA Board Member\n\n\n10.20 – 10.50\nQ&A session with author Marietje Schaake and the audience\nby Michael HINDLEY\, FMA Board Member\n\n\n10.50 – 11.00\nConclusions\nby Michael HINDLEY\, FMA Board Member\n\n\n\n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””]Following the Librorum event\, the FMA Annual Seminar took place from 11.00 to 13.00. \nThese events are part of the FMA End of Year Greetings from 3-4 December 2024. SUMMARY:"La finanza per la società. Dal dominio al servizio. Cenni sulla necessità di una trasformazione." by Vitaliano Gemelli
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column width=”2/3″][vc_column_text]On 6 December\, from 17.00 to 18.30 FMA member Vitaliano Gemelli presented his book “La finanza per la società. Dal dominio al servizio. Cenni sulla necessità di una trasformazione” (Finance for society. From domination to service. The objective of the book is to show the worldwide problem of sovereign debts and proposes a solution hypothesis with the aim of decoupling them from the financial market\, to prevent states from suffering the effects of economic and financial crises\, as has happened recently. \nThe recording of the Librorum event is available here below. It presents a political vision of the existing problems\, without presuming to have sociological or economic expertise\, but only on the basis of a sensitivity deriving from experience in national and European institutions. The political events of the present day are intertwined with significant economic events such as the crisis; they must be explored in all the aspects inherent to human society\, without neglecting the multiple sensitivities that each person brings as positive baggage to enrich society. Ultimately\, any action taken by the institutions must aim at the human growth of each person and the enhancement of their precious originality. The essay dwells on the worldwide problem of sovereign debts and proposes a solution hypothesis with the aim of decoupling them from the financial market\, to prevent states from suffering the effects of economic and financial crises\, as has happened recently. The book also includes translations of the text into English\, German\, French and Spanish.\n\n\n\n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_images_carousel images=”23360\,23364\,23366\,23368″ img_size=”large” onclick=”custom_link” custom_links_target=”_blank” speed=”2000″ autoplay=”yes” wrap=”yes” custom_links=”#E-8_aHR0cHMlM0ElMkYlMkZmbGljLmtyJTJGcyUyRmFIQnFqQWl1QjMlMkNodHRwcyUzQSUyRiUyRmZsaWMua3IlMkZzJTJGYUhCcWpBaXVCMyUyQ2h0dHBzJTNBJTJGJTJGZmxpYy5rciUyRnMlMkZhSEJxakFpdUIzJTJDaHR0cHMlM0ElMkYlMkZmbGljLmtyJTJGcyUyRmFIQnFqQWl1QjMlMkNodHRwcyUzQSUyRiUyRmZsaWMua3IlMkZzJTJGYUhCcWpBaXVCMw==”][vc_column_text] \nYou can find more pictures about the Librorum with Vitaliano Gemelli here.  \n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
