On 26 and 27 March 2026, the FMA organised a virtual visit to Cyprus on the occasion of the Cypriot Presidency of the Council of the EU.

A delegation of European former parliamentarians led by FMA President Klaus Hänsch participated in the two-day online visit to Cyprus. They met with representatives of the Cypriot Parliament, United Nations representatives and former Members of the European Parliament to discuss the priorities of the Cyprus’ Presidency of the EU Council and the current political landscape of the island nation.

On 26 March, the FMA commenced its official visit with a virtual meeting with Hon. Harris Georgiades, Chairman of the House of Representatives’ Foreign and European Affairs Committee. Later that day, the FMA discussed the UN’s role in Cyprus with Khassim Diagne, Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General and Head of the UN Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus. This was followed by a meeting with Nicodemos Damianou, Deputy Minister of Research, Innovation and Digital Policy, who shared his expertise on artificial intelligence and cybersecurity. To conclude the day, the delegation met with the representatives of the Committee on Missing Persons: Leonidas Pantelides, Hakkı Müftüzade, and Pierre Gentile.

On March 27, the FMA met with guest speaker Antigoni Papadopoulou, a former MEP (S&D, 2009–2014) and FMA member from Cyprus. She delivered a presentation titled “Cyprus, Past and Present Challenges and Opportunities”, providing the delegation with a deeper historical context and a forward-looking analysis of the region’s geopolitical landscape.

A full report about the FMA visit to Cyprus will be included in the FMA June 2026 Bulletin.
