Workshop ‘The European Parliament: Past, Present and Future’
This hybrid event, organized in partnership with the Historical Archives of the European Union, convenes politicians, scholars, and professionals to reflect on Brussels’ current political landscape through the lens of historical developments.
The high-level workshop will provide an analysis of the 2024 European elections and their outcomes, placing them in the broader historical context of the European Parliament’s evolution.
The workshop begins on Thursday, 17 October, with a roundtable featuring former officials and Members of the European Parliament, focusing on the latest EU political dynamics, particularly regarding the European Parliament’s role.
Panel II will then examine the EP’s accountability mechanisms in a historical light, particularly within the broader debate on executive authority within the EU.
On Friday, 18 October, Panel III will address the process of electing the President of the Commission, setting contemporary developments against the backdrop of the historical negotiations between the European Parliament, the European Council, and Member States.
Finally, Panel IV will wrap up the workshop by analyzing voting behavior in European elections and the evolving relationships between political groups within the European Parliament over time.
