FMA ANNUAL EVENTS DECEMBER 6-7, 2022

THE FUTURE OF ECONOMY AND FINANCE IN EUROPE

at the heart of debates with former and current MEPs

The events will be chaired by the President of the FMA and Former President of the European Parliament, Dr. Klaus Hänsch.

 

On 6 December 2022, from 17.00 to 18.30, the Former MEP Vitaliano GEMELLI will present his book “Finance for society. From domination to service. Signs of the need for a transformation” at the Librorum event that will be held in the Auditorium of the House of European History. The essay dwells on the worldwide problem of sovereign debts and proposes a solution hypothesis with the aim of decoupling them from the financial market, to prevent states from suffering the effects of economic and financial crises, as has happened recently. The event will be opened and concluded by FMA President Klaus HÄNSCH. FMA Vice-President Monica BALDI will present the author and his book and after that FMA Board Member Paul RÜBIG will coordinate the Q&A session with the audience in the room and connected online. Simultaneous interpretation will be available in English, French and Italian.

 

On 7 December, from 9.30 to 12.00 (Brussels’ time), the FMA will organise its 2022 Annual Seminar on ‘Reflections on the Economic Future of Europe in the European Parliament, Brussels. The European Union and its member states have faced very serious economic, social, health and environmental challenges accompanied by a very complex and ever-changing geopolitical framework. Leading speakers will discuss the economic scenarios that are being prepared in the short and long term and the actions that should be taken at European level. The audience will be welcomed by FMA President Klaus HÄNSCH.

 

The Vice-Chair of the Committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs Eva Maria POPTCHEVA MEP will open the seminar, followed by Prof. Joaquín ALMUNIA, Chairman of the Board of the Centre for European Policy Studies (CEPS) and Former Vice-President of the Commission, Ivailo KALFIN Executive Director of Eurofond, Lasse BOEHM Head of the Economic Policies Unit, Members’ Research Service, EPRS, European Parliament. The FMA Secretary Teresa RIERA MADURELL will moderate the panel session on Defending and strengthening EU’s competitiveness and social cohesion.

Simultaneous interpretation will be available in English, French, German, Italian and Spanish.

 

To continue, on 7 December from 13.30 to 15.00, the recently established European Parliament History Service (EPHS), within the European Parliamentary Research Service (EPRS), will organise a Roundtable on “President Lord Plumb: A Historical Appraisal” in the European Parliament. The FMA Vice-President Monica BALDI will be one of the main speakers at the event. President Lord Henry Plumb was EP President during 1987-1989 and Founding Member and Honorary President of the FMA.

The Former Members Association of the European Parliament aims to foster relationships between former Members of the European Parliament by publishing a quarterly Bulletin and newsletters, organising social and cultural events, information meetings, debates and study visits, and by keeping in contact with similar organisations in other countries. In addition to that, FMA members engage in democracy support and election observation missions as well as fostering the cooperation with universities by participating pro bono in the EP to Campus educational programme.
